The Progress of Final Inquiry Plan

In my inquiry plan, I mentioned I am going to work with a new Chinese teacher in our district. I will videotape two lessons of hers: Before and after sharing my presentation.
I have been discussing the plan with the teacher; we might only videotape one lesson with a topic but with two different activities to approach the students. One is an ineffective, plain activity that most inexperience language teachers tend to do when they start the career without professional help, the other one is using one of the activities I will be sharing with her. Since it’s going to be the same content but different activities, the audiences could clearly see and compare the effect of each activity from students’ participation and the result of learning.

Final Inquiry Plan- Progress

In my plan, I talked about videotape two lessons before and after the presentation I am going ot show th etacher.
I have been talking to the teacher who I am going to work with about the inquiry plan process. After my showing her presenteation, we might actually just videotape the content she is teaching in just one lesson but use two different activities for the content. One is the one she has been using which is not very interesting and not effective teaching, the other one is using one of the activities I shared with her. Since it's going to be the same content, audiences can clear see and compare the students' participation and result of learning. In my inquiry plan, what I really want to to show is how PD opportunities help teachers' teaching and studetns' learning.

Task 5 Growing and Developing Professionally

After went through the components in domain 4, I am most interested in component 4E: Growing and Developing Professionally. I always believe teacher qualities are a very important fact in education system. To me, a very adequate teachers’ professional growth plan can help the students very much. I am aware that I did choose a very difficult topic because it’s going to be challenging to show the result of my inquiry plan.
I like to have a full picture what I am doing and going. I like to set goals and work toward the goal. In world language class, we call it “Backward Design”. So, I choose the video “An Introduction to Teacher Development” In this video, it shows what a good teacher should look like. http://www.edutopia.org/teacher-development-introduction-video
Teachers should have not only solid knowledge, have to be comfortable with instruction and keep up with rapid developed technology, but also they need to have the passion to share sharing learning. Teachers should be active learners, educators, passion, accepting kids’ curiosity, contain deep content subject knowledge, integrated theory and practical experience. They also need to be strong mentors. They need ongoing support, self-assessment and reflection to help them become better teachers. Learning doesn’t stop, teachers need to always to learn pedagogy to make difference in students’ lives.
By attending development training, watching master teaching how they interact with children is very powerful learning tool. It’s totally valuable, you can not just image anything you have learned, but if you see it works in your own eyes, you will truly learn.

Like I mentioned before, I truly believe teachers’ accountabilities. People always say, you can figure out the family from a child. I want to add that “you can figure out a teacher from a student” The article I have read is “Why Is Teacher Development Important? Because Students Deserve the Best” by Edutopia Staff http://www.edutopia.org/teacher-development-introduction I cannot agree the article more. “Great teachers help create great students. In fact, research shows that an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement, so it is critical to pay close attention to how we train and support both new and experienced educators.” Learning process is endless. Universities provide online degree seeking program for students who want to enhance their profession. Such as full time teachers want to gain more knowledge, catching up new area technology or seeking higher degrees.
Teacher-Induction Programs In order to create more skilled teachers, from the start, new teachers need more support from colleagues, school and district. Great induction programs create opportunities for novice teachers to learn from best practices and analyze and reflect on their teaching.
Ongoing Professional Development It is very important for all teachers to have ongoing and regular opportunities to learn from each other. This professional development helps teachers to gain newest information about how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new curriculum resources, and more. The recent development training I went to is Kentucky World Language Conference. Since 2007, using technology to teach students second or third language is always the main topic any conference focuses on. I realized that now generations are in a digital world, if we don’t change with the way we approach students’ learning with the world, students will loosing their interests learning the content we want them to learn. If I haven’t attended the conferences about the topic, I probably still use traditional way to teach my modern students. Students learning outcomes will be minimized.
The blog I have read is “House committee recognizes PD's role in the fight for equitability” created by Stephanie Hirsh http://www.nsdc.org/learningBlog/post.cfm/house-committee-recognizes-pd-s-role-in-the-fight-for-equitability
I am truly impressed by the effort about the importance of teaching development that NSDC try to make. They really acknowledge the importance of ensuring great teachers for every student. Teachers need help from colleagues for learning and problem solving. They need the support to be successful in these most challenging situations. Placement plus professional development equals great teaching for every student. Effective professional development is a must for teachers in order to ensure every student's success.

Professional Practice--Domain Four

I have chosen Domain IV. As Danielson said, Domain IV and I both reprensent "behind the scenes". I scanned through domain one, I realized that I have been putting the content of Domain one into my practicing teaching. (I am attaching the power point I presented to other Chinese teachers at conferences. The power point intends to show the teachers how to plan and how to use activities to attach to the Chinese teaching.) This year, my professional growth plan is forcus on professional leadership. I need to continue reaching professional standards and improving my own practice in order to lead others.

Which component from this domain are you most comfortable with?
Participating in a professional community. You always can learn form other teachers.

Which component from this domain do you believe most strongly ties to instruction?
All of the conponents are very essential. Maintianing Accurate Records. It's essential for teachers to keep track of student learning so that they know which parts of the curriculum students have learned and which they have not and from there, teachers can use the information on hands to prepare for the next lesson plan.

Which component from this domain would you like to zero in on in your own instruction?
Reflecting on teaching.

Examples.
Component 4a: Reflecting on Teaching
As I mantioned before, I am designing Chinese curriculum for middle schools. Using reflecting on teaching, I still refining the curriculum I have designed two years ago. For teaching practicing, I have three Chinese I classes this year, I am able to refine my lessons through the first one and give me suggestions for the next lesson.
Component 4b: Maintaining Accurate Records
In a world language class, teachers need to have accurate records on students' oral and other performance in order to make further lesson design.
Component 4c: Communicating with Families
I call families not only when some issues come up but also for good news. In that way, the family will want to cooperate with me.
Component 4d: Participating in a Professional Community
I am a part of Kentucky Chinese Language Association. Interacting with other teachers give my ideas I have not thought. Sharing experiences makes teaching much easier.
Component 4e: Growing and Developing Professionally
I have been sharing my teachingpracticing with teachers from different districts in KY.vI am also conducting a research about parenting skills. I will share the results with my colleagues through presentations. There have been a lot of groups came to my class to observe my teaching: KY Chinese teachers. Danviel Independence School...
Component 4f: Showing Professionalism
Again, I have very high standard for my work. Daily staying late after school for designing curriculum, lesson design, grade records helps my student reach high achievement.

Also come up with at least one question that you can post for others in your group to respond to.
Think about what a perfect teacher should look alike? All we are trying to do is becoming a better teacher or leader. It's like a backward design, if we know the final model, so we could work toward the goal.
